Starting a boxing or kickboxing-based workout? Whether you’re here to burn fat, build strength, or just try something new, one thing is certain—protecting your hands is a must. At RockBox Fitness, we combine boxing, kickboxing, and functional training in every class, which means your gear matters just as much as your motivation.
Here’s everything you need to know about hand wraps, boxing gloves, and keeping your hands safe while you train like a fighter.
🥊 Why Hand Wraps Matter
Hand wraps aren’t optional—they’re essential. Underneath your gloves, they act as a support system for the small bones, ligaments, and joints in your hands and wrists. Wrapping properly can help prevent injuries like sprains, fractures, and knuckle abrasions. They also absorb sweat, keeping your gloves fresher for longer.
Even in a non-contact, fitness-based setting like RockBox, hand wraps add a layer of protection for bag work, allowing you to punch harder and train smarter.
🧤 Traditional Wraps vs. Gel Wraps
At RockBox, we offer both traditional and gel-style wraps. Each has its benefits:
- Traditional Wraps are the go-to for most experienced members. They offer full support and are completely adjustable, but they require a little practice to master.
- Gel Wraps are beginner-friendly. They slide on quickly and provide light support with added convenience. However, they may lack the wrist stability needed for more intense sessions.
Not sure which to use? Ask a coach—we’re here to help you find the right fit based on your comfort and training level.
🔄 How to Wrap Your Hands (Traditional Wraps)
- Start by placing your thumb through the loop and wrapping around your wrist 3–4 times.
- Wrap across your knuckles and then secure the thumb.
- Thread between each finger, starting between the pinky and ring finger, to lock in support.
- Finish with several more wraps around your wrist and secure with Velcro.
- Make sure the wrap feels snug—but not tight—and test it out with a few light punches.
Proper wrapping helps you punch with more confidence, power, and control.
🥇 Choosing the Right Boxing Gloves
Boxing gloves come in a range of sizes, usually between 10 oz and 20 oz. At RockBox, we recommend 12 oz or 14 oz gloves for most members. Lighter gloves are easier to move with, while heavier gloves provide more padding and wrist protection. The right glove depends on your size, goals, and comfort.
🧼 How to Care for Your Gloves
To get the most life out of your gloves (typically 12+ months), follow these tips:
- Wipe them with a natural spray after every workout.
- Use a cotton cloth or paper towel to absorb moisture.
- Air dry them using a fan or glove dryer.
- Store in a cool, dry place—never leave them in your gym bag!
